How I will frame and mount a portrait.

  1. First will be the backboard, these are all cut to size and ordered in bespoke per customer.
  2. The second layer to the frame will be the polyester moisture barrier.
  3. Next will be the barrier board which the art will sit on.
  4. The art will then be T hinged to the barrier board.
  5. Next comes the window mount (2.2mm conservation mounts)
  6. Then on top of this I will put the glazing, which is 2mm acrylic glazing as standard.
  7. After this I will be the frame sealing tape – aluminium barrier.
  8. All the layers will then sit in the frame.
  9. I will then seal the whole thing with framers’ gum tape. The frame will come with fixtures and fitting supplied.
  10. Finally, I will protect the portrait and box ready for shipping.

Paper:

Stonehenge Papers (100% Cotton)

Stonehenge papers are a superb choice, offering excellent quality and durability. These papers are included in the price of a portrait commission and come in various shades to suit different needs:

  • Pearl Grey: Ideal for creating highlights, especially in light or white-coloured areas of a pet portrait.
  • Fawn: Great for making certain elements stand out and pairs well with oak frames.
  • White: Perfect for all pencil-based mediums, particularly for graphite drawings.
  • Winsor & Newton Professional Canvas

For painted portraits, Winsor & Newton Professional Canvas is my go-to choice. These canvases feature an innovative pro-stretcher™ device and professionally constructed frames made from kiln-dried solid wood stretcher bars, ensuring durability and resistance to warping. While I may use other brands in certain circumstances, Winsor & Newton is a top preference.

Best Medium for Winsor & Newton Professional Canvas:

    • Acrylic Paintings: Winsor & Newton Professional Acrylics are the brightest acrylic paints available, using advanced resin technology for unmatched brilliance. These paints offer rich, intense, and deep colours, ensuring vibrant and durable portraits.

In some cases, I will treat the portrait surface with a Windsor and newton professional portrait fixative,, the main idea behind these sprays is to stop the medium from smudging, and to fix it to the paper, it can also help reduce glare from light, especially with graphite medium.
