Materials & Process for This German Shepherd, Mix Breed Portrait

This coloured pencil portrait captures the rich textures and layered tones of a German Shepherd–type dog. I built the fur gradually through fine, overlapping strokes to create depth and softness, allowing the warm tan shades and deep blacks to blend naturally across the coat.

I paid particular attention to the structure of the ears and the subtle transitions in the fur, which help define the character and presence of the dog. Coloured pencil is a medium that rewards patience, and this piece really highlights the realism that can be achieved through careful layering.

We lost our 13 year old labradoodle in September. She was the love of my husband’s life, so I ordered a bespoke portrait of her for his Christmas present. The whole process was extremely easy. I sent several photos to Robert and he chose one that he could work with. He kept me informed of the process and sent a photo of the finished portrait for approval. He had produced a beautiful picture in coloured pencils that exactly captured our doodles expression. I chose the option to have it framed and it was finished and sent to me in plenty of time for Christmas.
