“Ginger Whiskers & Mystery Mix” – A Mixed Breed Dog Portrait in Pencil

Coloured pencil portrait of a ginger‑tan mixed‑breed dog with short fur and soft drop ears on white paper.

This piece features a mixed‑breed dog with a warm ginger‑tan coat, soft drop ears, and sleek, short fur. I wanted this mixed‑breed dog portrait to showcase the subtle striping and natural warmth across the chest and shoulders, building depth through soft layering and careful pencil strokes.

The warm colouring gave me plenty of tonal variation to work with — sienna, honey tones, earthy browns — blending together to create a gentle, character‑rich finish. The angle and posture make this mixed‑breed dog drawing feel friendly and full of personality.

Materials & Process for This Mixed‑Breed Dog Portrait

For this mixed‑breed dog portrait, I worked on bright white paper to let the ginger‑tan tones stand out clearly. I began by mapping the shape of the chest, then slowly developed the coat using short, controlled strokes to recreate the smooth texture of the dog’s fur.

Layering warm browns and ochres gave the coat its depth, while gentle blending helped bring out the natural striping. Each added layer contributed to the final look of this mixed‑breed dog coloured pencil artwork, giving it a soft but detailed finish.

Labradoodle Portrait

We lost our 13 year old labradoodle in September. She was the love of my husband’s life, so I ordered a bespoke portrait of her for his Christmas present. The whole process was extremely easy. I sent several photos to Robert and he chose one that he could work with. He kept me informed of the process and sent a photo of the finished portrait for approval. He had produced a beautiful picture in coloured pencils that exactly captured our doodles expression. I chose the option to have it framed and it was finished and sent to me in plenty of time for Christmas. Needless to say my husband cried when he opened his present and the portrait now has pride of place in our living room. Thank you Robert for giving us not only a wonderful present, but one that we will cherish forever.

Our son presented us with a beautiful portrait of our Weimaraner completed by Bobby 2 years ago. We were so delighted with it that we commissioned Bobby to do a portrait of our now companion, Amber the Vizsla. Absolutely delighted with the portrait just received, thank you so much Bobby, you are extremely talented. I would recommend Bobby for any portraits you would like, perfect results everyone.
