This coloured pencil portrait of a French Bulldog was created using a combination of Derwent Lightfast and Prismacolor pencils on smooth white paper. I focused on capturing the dog’s alert, curious expression — especially the deep folds of the muzzle, the velvety texture of the ears, and those warm, glossy eyes that really bring the piece to life.
The short coat presented a great opportunity to build up subtle layers of colour and tone, blending soft tans, creams, and greys to create depth without losing the characteristic structure of the breed’s wrinkles. Rendering the dark, textured nose was a highlight of the process, using fine directional strokes to achieve a realistic finish.
This portrait was completed as part of a commission, and I’ve documented the full process — including the timelapse and step‑by‑step notes — in the accompanying blog post.
