Expressive Equine Horse Sketch: A Soft A3 Graphite Portrait

This expressive equine horse sketch was created on A3 paper using my trusted Faber‑Castell graphite pencils, giving me the space and control to shape the horse’s personality through gentle shading and tonal depth. Working at this scale allows the portrait to breathe; the features settle naturally into place without being overworked, while the softer tonal transitions help build a calm and thoughtful presence.

Rather than focusing on extreme detail, I approached this portrait by emphasising expression—capturing the relaxed ears, the softness around the eyes, and the peaceful stance of the horse. The texture of the coat and the tonal variation across the face were built up in layers, letting the graphite create dimension without overwhelming the drawing.
