Appaloosa Horse Portrait in Coloured Pencil | Hand Drawn Horse Commission

One of the most rewarding aspects of creating an Appaloosa portrait is recreating the breed’s distinctive markings. Every spot, colour variation, and subtle transition within the coat was built up through multiple layers of coloured pencil to achieve a realistic finish whilst maintaining the natural beauty of the horse.

The expressive eyes and facial features were particularly important in this piece, helping to convey the horse’s individual character and personality. My goal with every Hand Drawn Horse Portrait is not only to achieve a strong likeness but also to create artwork that reflects the special bond between horse and owner.

The combination of Prismacolor’s rich pigmentation and Derwent Lightfast’s exceptional permanence allowed me to achieve vibrant colour, fine detail, and a professional finish throughout the portrait. Working on Stonehenge Pearl Grey paper also helped create a pleasing balance between highlights and shadows, enhancing the overall realism of the drawing.

As with all of my commissioned horse portraits, this artwork was completed entirely by hand from reference photographs supplied by the client. The finished portrait provides a lasting keepsake that celebrates this beautiful Appaloosa and can be treasured for many years to come.
