Materials & Process for This German Shepherd Portrait

For this German Shepherd portrait, I worked on softly toned paper, which provided a perfect base for both the warm highlights and the deeper shadow areas in the coat. I started by mapping the overall structure, focusing on the strong lines of the face and the upright ears before layering in the fur direction.

Short, consistent pencil strokes helped create the texture of the coat, while gradual glazing added warmth to the tan areas and depth to the darker patches. Bringing out the glow in the eyes

We lost our 13 year old labradoodle in September. She was the love of my husband’s life, so I ordered a bespoke portrait of her for his Christmas present. The whole process was extremely easy. I sent several photos to Robert and he chose one that he could work with. He kept me informed of the process and sent a photo of the finished portrait for approval. He had produced a beautiful picture in coloured pencils that exactly captured our doodles expression. I chose the option to have it framed and it was finished and sent to me in plenty of time for Christmas. Needless to say my husband cried when he opened his present and the portrait now has pride of place in our living room.
