When I sit down to draw a Jack Russell Terrier portrait, I’m always reminded just how much personality these little dogs carry. This one had that perfect curious head tilt and those bright, honest eyes that pull you straight in. My goal with this drawing was to catch that spark — the expression that makes a Jack Russell so unmistakable.
I started with a loose sketch, then moved into an underpainting, blending the first layers of coloured pencil with Zest‑It Pencil Blend. It helps me smooth out those early colours before I start tightening things up. Once that base was dry, I slowly built up the depth with more controlled layers.
This portrait is worked at A3 size, which might sound fairly big, but when you’re squeezing in this much detail it becomes surprisingly challenging. Smaller portraits demand sharper pencils, tiny strokes, and a lot of patience — especially around the fur texture and eyes. One little slip can stand out, so it’s all about slowing down and being steady.
I also put together a 2.3‑minute timelapse video showing the whole process — from the sketch and underpainting all the way to the final details.
For materials, I used Prismacolor Premier pencils andDerwent Lightfast pencils on Stonehenge White paper. Prismacolor gives me those smooth, soft blends for the warm coat, while Lightfast is brilliant for crisp details and long‑term durability. I made sure to protect the white areas of the chest and muzzle right from the start to keep them bright and clean.
With Jack Russells, the whole portrait hangs on their expression. I spent extra time layering the warm browns, umbers, and hints of burgundy around the eyes to get that glassy, slightly wet look that brings them to life. Short, directional strokes helped build that sleek fur on the face, while the ears and nose needed slower, softer blending to keep the textures gentle. A warm, subtle base underneath helps keep the focus right on the dog’s features.
