Cat portrait timeline video.

cat art process

From outline to first layers

I recorded this short timelapse to show how a coloured‑pencil cat portrait comes together layer by layer. I start with a careful outline, then build value and texture slowly so the features never feel rushed.

Building colour and texture without banding

For the main layers I use soft, oil‑based coloured pencils and a gentle blender to unify strokes without losing crisp edges. I often work on Stonehenge paper for its friendly surface. For darker coats, I look for reflected light rather than pushing everything to one flat black — that’s what keeps fur lively.

Finishing touches: acrylic highlights

Towards the end I add a few acrylic highlights with a fine brush to bring out whiskers and catchlights.

What pencils and paper do you use for cat portraits?

I use soft, blend‑friendly coloured pencils and Stonehenge paper because its surface takes multiple layers without becoming shiny or muddy. It lets me build smooth fur textures and bright eyes. colour portrait materials

Do you add acrylic highlights to every portrait?

Most of the time, yes. Acrylic highlights help bring whiskers, eyes and nose reflections to life. They’re added at the very end so they stay crisp and bright.

Can you combine multiple cat photos into one portrait?

Yes — if the lighting and angles match well. If you send several photos, I can advise which ones will combine naturally into a single composition.

How do I order a custom cat portrait?

You can order directly through my Order a Portrait page. Upload your photos, choose your size, and I’ll get back to you with a start date and any recommendations. Ordering

Do you need to see the whole cat or just the face?

For head‑and‑shoulders portraits, a good close‑up of the face is enough. If you want the chest, collar or a specific pose included, extra reference photos help.
