Creating a portrait of a beloved pet is always a deeply personal and rewarding experience. Recently, I had the pleasure of working on a Scottish Terrier drawing using Prismacolor pencils on Stonehenge fawn-coloured paper. This Scottish Terrier drawing was not just an artistic endeavour but a heartfelt tribute to a faithful friend.

The Play of Light on Fur

One of the most captivating aspects of a Scottish Terrier drawing is capturing the play of light on its fur. Scotties have a distinctive coat that can appear almost black, but with the right lighting, you can see a range of subtle hues and textures. Using Prismacolor pencils allowed me to layer colours effectively, creating depth and dimension. The fawn-coloured Stonehenge paper provided a warm, neutral background that enhanced the richness of the fur tones.

In this Scottish Terrier drawing, I paid special attention to how light hits the fur, creating highlights and shadows that bring the portrait to life. The glossy sheen on the fur, especially around the muzzle and ears, was achieved by blending lighter shades into the darker base colors. This technique not only adds realism but also emphasizes the unique texture of the Scottie’s coat.
